  • Notes
    • From FindaGrave:

Vermont Governor, US Congressman. He was raised in Bennington, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1819. Hall served in the Vermont House of Representatives in 1827, as Bennington County Clerk from 1828 to 1829, and as county State's Attorney from 1828 to 1831. In 1832 Hall was a successful Anti-Jacksonian candidate for the US House in a special election. He later became a Whig, and he served from January 1833 to March 1843. Hall was Vermont's Bank Commissioner from 1843 to 1846, and a Vermont Supreme Court Justice from 1846 to 1850. From 1850 to 1851 he was Second Comptroller of the US Treasury. In 1851 Hall became the federal Land Commissioner in California, responsible for settling claims based on Spanish and Mexican titles, and he served until 1854. Hall became a Republican when the party was founded in the mid-1850s. From 1858 to 1860 he served as Governor of Vermont. In 1861 he was one of the delegates to the Peace Convention which attempted to prevent the start of the Civil War. Hall was an author and historian, and served as President of the Vermont Historical Society from 1858 to 1866.
