Chief Joseph Portrait by Cyrenius Hall on US Postage Stamp
Chief Joseph Portrait by Cyrenius Hall on US Postage Stamp
The 6-cent stamp portraying Chief Joseph, the great Nez Perce warrior, was first placed on sale at Washington, DC, on November 4, 1968, as a tribute to Indian heritage and to mark the opening of the National Portrait Gallery. It is the first US stamp to feature a Native American.

Born in eastern Oregon about 1840 as Hin-mah-too-yah-kekht's (Thunder Rolling down the Mountain), Chief Joseph led the Nez Perce in their fight against removal to a reservation by the federal government. After a valiant fight, Chief Joseph surrendered on October 5, 1877, with the immortal words, "I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. The old men all are dead…From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." After his surrender, Chief Joseph was taken to Fort Leavenworth as a prisoner, where in 1878 his portrait was painted by Cyrenius Hall. The 22x18 inch oil painting is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

This five-color stamp required three passes through the presses: two by offset and one by Giori. For the flesh tones, red and yellow were laid on by offset, followed by brown by intaglio. The warrior's hair was printed black by intaglio, with blue tones by offset. Robert J. Jones of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing designed the stamp. Calligraphy was by Crimilda Pontes of Washington, DC. The stamp was issued in panes of 50, with an initial printing of 120 million.

Born in Blue Earth, Minnesota on March 20, 1830, Hall made trips to the West in the 1850's via the Oregon Trail. He painted scenery in and around Portland before moving south to San Francisco where he painted a huge panorama of the Overland Trail and of California. From 1861 to 1866 he lived in South America, where he had gone for his brother's health. Hall pursued his profession there until the threat of war between Chile and Spain forced his return to the United States. Returning to New York City, in 1867 he sailed to England and France, spending three years in Munich studying art. Upon his return to New York, he remained active there for a few years before settling in Chicago, where he died in 1896. Hall exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1873. His paintings are included in the Chicago Historical Society, the Kansas State Historical Society and the Wyoming State Museum in Yellowstone." Hall's portrait of Chief Joseph rests at the National Portrait Gallery. This same portrait was portrayed on a 1968 United States postage stamp. The artist is also listed in Who Was Who in American Art, the Illustrated Biographical Encyclopedia of Artists of the American West, Dawdy's Artists of the American West as well as Edan Hughes Artists in California 1786-1940.
