  • Notes
    • From FindaGrave:

Mother of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War Union General and 18th President of the United States. She married Jesse Root Grant on June 25, 1821 in Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio, and died of old age at her home on No. 582 Pavonia Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey. Considered to be distant and lacking in motherly affection towards her son Ulysses, she is seldom mentioned in his papers. She is buried near her husband.

      Grant's Mother Dead.

Jersey City, May 11-Mrs. Hannah S. Grant, mother of the ex-president, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Corbin, on Pavonia avenue, Jersey City heights, this afternoon. Mrs. Grant rose this morning in apparently good health, but was seized with severe pains in the region of the heart shortly before noon. A physician was at once summoned, but she expired before his arrival. Mrs. Grant was born in Berks county, Pa., November 23, and was married to Jessie R. Grant at Clermont, Ohio. She was the mother of six children, three of whom are now living, Mrs. Corbin, U. S. Grant and Mrs. Kramer, wife of the present United States minister to Switzerland. The funeral services will be held to-morrow afternoon at her late residence. The interment will take place in the family plot at Spring Grove cemetery. Cincinnati, O.
