      U.S. Congressman. He attended Middleburg Academy New York, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced to practice law in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was a assistant United States Marshal in 1839 and prosecuting attorney of Union County, (1840-42). Moving to Iowa, in 1844, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fourth Congress, (1855-57). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Buchanan the 2nd Chief Justice of Nebraska Territory, in 1858 and served until his death at age 46.
