DR. ORLAND PAUL SHIPPEY SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS AT SALIDA, COLORADO FEBRUARY 9, 1942
Orland Paul Shippey, since 1904 a practicing physician in this community, died at the Rio Grande hospital, Salida, Colorado, Monday, February 9, 1942 at 12:45 p. m. He had been ill with a serious heart ailment since late 1940, and had been forced to forego continuation of his active practice in large measure since that time. On January 28, 1942 his condition became seriously acute as a result of abdominal complications and he was hospitalized. Surgery became necessary and was performed Monday morning, February 9, 1942. Dr. Shippey survived the operation, but died shortly after when his heart failed. Members of his immediate family were with him throughout the last illness and at the time of his death.
Dr. Shippey was born April 5, 1873 at Vermont, Illinois, the first son of J. A. B. Shippey and Sarah E. Shippey. The doctor spent his boyhood in his native state and there received his early education. He began his medical schooling at St. Louis, Missouri, and then entered Rush Medical College at Chicago, Illinios [sic] where he spent two years in training. He completed his training at Gross' Medical College, Denver, Colorado from which school he was graduated in June, 1895.
After his graduation the Doctor served his internship in Denver and in 1896 and 1897 served as resident physician at Arapahoe County Hospital (now Denver General Hospital) and at St. Anthony's Hospital, Denver. In 1897 Dr. Shippey was appointed physician and surgeon by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company and came to Villa Grove, Colorado in that year to take up his duties, also establishing his private practice in the San Luis Valley at that time. His connection with the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company continued throughout his life, and from 1897 until 1904 he served as surgeon with the Denver and Rio Grande Railway.
On September 26, 1900 at Villa Grove, Colorado he was married to Grace M. Hall, daughter of Jason B. Hall and Emma S. Hall, pioneer citizens of Colorado. The Shippeys made their home at Villa Grove until 1904 when they moved their residence to Saguache, Colorado. There the Doctor continued his practice of medicine, maintaining his connection with the Villa Grove community in the operation of the Hall ranch at that place throughout the remainder of his lifetime.
As a doctor of medicine Dr. Shippey's practice took him throughout Saguache county and the northern San Luis valley. He was generally recognized as a leading practitioner in Colorado by the profession and the laity alike. He was a fellow of the American Medical Association, The Colorado State Medical Society, and the San Luis Valley Medical Association, having served as vice-president of the state society and as president of the valley association. During his residence in Saguache he was city and county health officer.
Dr. Shippey extended his activities beyond medicine and ranching to become a civic leader. He was active throughout his life in all phases of community life and counted as his friends a multitude of persons in all walks of life throughout the county, the San Luis valley and the State. He was a member of the local Masonic Order, and served as its Worshipful Master for a term. His Masonic affiliations also included membership in the Scottish Rite, Al Kaly Temple of Pueblo, Colorado, his class being the charter group of that temple.
At the time of his death, Dr. Shippey was considered the dean of the medical profession in the San Luis valley, his practice having extended continuously over a period of 45 years in the region. Over this long period he had become to many a confidant, adviser and friend as well as physician. His passing is mourned by many who feel the loss of a friend and counsellor, a doer of good, and an inspiring helper.
The Doctor leaves surviving him his wife, Mrs. Grace H. Shippey, a daughter, Mrs. C. N. Gotthelf, both of Saguache, a son, John H. Shippey, of Denver, Colorado, and a brother, Arthur of Los Angeles, California.
Episcopal funeral service was held Wednesday, February 11, 1942 at 2:00 p. m. at the Stewart Chapel in Salida, Colorado. The remains will be cremated and interred at Fairmo[u]nt Mausoleum, Denver, Colorado, where his daughter, Grace, who predeceased him, is also interred.
