John was born in Boston in 1638. He removed to Windsor, CT and is among the list of freemen there Oct. 7, 1669, having become one three years previously. He spelled his name Modesley. On the 10th Dec. 1664, he married Mary, the daughter of Benj. Newbury, and had 5 children born in Windsor (more detail is listed in the book). He moved to Westfield in 1677 and had 5 more children (see book for detailed listing). He probably removed back to Windsor before his death, as he died there Aug. 18, 1690. He was lieutenant in King Philip's war, and in 1678 was appointed "lieut. to the ffoote company" at Westfield, and in 1679 was one of a com'te of two appointed by the town to petition the General Court in their behalf. All of his sons were living in 1706, and had families residing in Westfield.
