- HALLOWELL- Sylvia Mae Tibbetts, 81, of Hallowell, passed away peacefully at home with her family and little dog, Sadie, at her side on Saturday, March 4, 2017.
Sylvia was born April 10, 1935 in Durham, the daughter of Clyde and Elsie (Locke) Hall.
She attended schools in Mt. Vernon and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1953 before enlisting and serving in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1957. Following her honorable discharge, she worked at Albany Felt Co. in Monmouth and Depositors Trust.
Sylvia met her very soon to be husband, Earl Tibbetts, on her birthday and they were married three months later on the Fourth of July. They were married 57 years.
Sylvia enjoyed being a stay at home mom and child care provider. She loved children and took special care of many over the years. She was also very creative and enjoyed painting, crocheting, baking and taking care of her beautiful flowers. She made sure a family birthday was never missed, bringing everyone together for a Wednesday night celebration "Suppah", cake and ice cream, which was Earl's favorite part. Sylvia kept her family close and made sure they felt loved.
She was predeceased by her husband, Earl, and step son, Earl Jr. Sylvia always said she had one speed and it wasn't fast, so it makes sense she was the last to go. She said good-bye to eight brothers and sisters, Bob, Milton, Herbert, Charlie and Teddy Hall, Merna Caret, Dorothy (Leighton) Keene and Aurilla Dumney.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Aurilla Holt and husband, John; son Russ Tibbetts and Laura Fisher and "son" Tim Merrithew; seven grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Holt, Craig, Courtney and Kyle Tibbetts, Cheryl Tibbetts, and Michelle Boucouvalas and husband, Steven; twelve great grandchildren, Jacob, Emma, Alexis, Hunter, Timika, Ian, Jordan, Raven, Elayna, Lauren, Demetrios and Petro; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial will be in the spring at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
Donations may be made in Sylvia's memory to Old South Congregational Church, P.O. Box 508, Hallowell, ME 04347.
Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church St., Augusta.
