HALLOWELL - Earl Russell Tibbetts, 86, of Hallowell, passed away peacefully while watching baseball with his son, Russ, Sunday July 24, 2016. He was born Nov. 29, 1929, in Rockwood, the son of Lester and Dorothy (Baston) Tibbetts. He attended school in Winthrop and as a young man, was a pitcher for a Maine League baseball team called the Tri-Corners. He also managed the bowling alley in downtown Winthrop, resetting all the pins by hand.
Earl served in the U.S. Navy for two years. He was Golden Gloves in the Green Cove Boxing team in 1949.
He married Sylvia Mae Hall July 4, 1959. He went to work at Bath Iron Works and was there for 40 years. After retiring from the "Yard" Earl delivered flowers for Berry & Berry Floral for 20 years, up to his 84th birthday. Customers would often ask for the "Older gentleman who does the little dance" to deliver their flowers.
Earl knew every short cut in the state of Maine, some longer than others. He loved hunting and fishing. Earl and his brother, Alvin, would take Joshua, Jessica and Courtney fishing when they were very young. Earl spent most of his time retrieving hooks from the trees, including Alvin's. They never brought any fish home.
Mr. Tibbetts enjoyed spending every second week of November "Upta" Camp Lester in Beddington with his sons, Earl Jr. "Tib" and Russ, brother, Lawrence and nephew, Peter. Their hunting party totaled more than the deer population. Earl looked forward to spending time with his family at Wednesday Night parties and for many years, breakfast with friends, Bob and Joyce Vickery at Hi-Hat Restaurant. He had a quick wit, an amazing sense of humor and a" He,He,He" laugh. He had the heart of a teddy bear and the handshake of a grizzly.
Earl was predeceased by six brothers, Edgar, Oral, Richard, Alton, Alvin, Lester, Jr. and sister, Esther and son, Earl, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sylvia; his children, Aurilla Holt and husband, John and son, Russ Tibbetts and Laura Fisher; his grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Holt, Craig, Courtney, and Kyle Tibbetts, Cheryl Tibbetts, and Michelle Boucouvalis; great-grandchildren, Timika, Ian, Jacob, Emma, Alexis, Hunter and Jordan; his brother, Lawrence; sister, Thelma; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.
