      The last name seems to be evolving from Batchelder to Bacheldor. Why the family decides to change the spelling of their surname is unknown.

      Ephraim was the son of Nathaniel Batchelder of Hampton Falls, Rockingham County, New Hampshire and Margaret Tilton Batchelder of Hampton Falls, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Margaret and Nathaniel had ten children. They were: Joseph Batchelder was born on 29 October 1743; Nathaniel Batchelder was born on 06 March 1745; John Batchelder was born on 24 March 1746/1747; Ephraim Batchelder was born on 04 March 1749; Joanna Batchelder was born on 11 August 1751; Josiah Batchelder was born on 31 October 1753; Thomas Batchelder was born on 21 November 1756; Elizabeth Batchelder was born on 17 September 1758; Samuel Batchelder was born on 21 April 1760; and Timothy Batchelder was born on 30 October 1762. All the children were born in Kensington, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

His second wife, Lydia Richardson, was the widow of Moses Richardson and the daughter of a Mr. Hall, of Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. At the first town meeting in Baldwin, Maine in 1802, Ephraim, Sr. was elected Constable.
