The last name seems to be evolving from Batchelder to Bacheldor. Why the family decides to change the spelling of their surname is unknown.
Ephraim was the son of Nathaniel Batchelder of Hampton Falls, Rockingham County, New Hampshire and Margaret Tilton Batchelder of Hampton Falls, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Margaret and Nathaniel had ten children. Ephraim, with his son, Ephraim, Jr., were early settlers in Baldwin, Maine, going there from New Hampshire. His second wife, Lydia Richardson, was the widow of Moses Richardson and the daughter of a Mr. Hall, of Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. At the first town meeting in Baldwin, Maine in 1802, Ephraim, Sr. was elected Constable.
