"If I differ from you in judgment, I shall be thankful to any of you to show me the light;" ___William Vassall

Most sources describe William using quotes from his opponents who were prolific writers. In truth, William was as Col. Aspinwell described him: William Vassall, "was no bigot or fanatic, but allowed to others the same liberty of conscience which he claimed for himself. .. in connection with the petition of Dr. Childe and others, are now the boasted foundation and corner-stone of our civil and political system ; while those upheld by his accusers are banished to the darkest and most enslaved regions of the earth." (Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Vol 6. 1863)

4 Mar 1628/9: William Vassall was named in charter of Massachusetts Bay Co. as Associate & Assistant. 29 Aug 1629: Signed the Cambridge Agreement. Was in Massachusetts Bay Colony for a few weeks, prior to arrival of Winthrop Fleet. Jun 1635: Arrived Mass. Bay Colony, on ship Blessing , age 42, with his wife & children & settled in Roxbury, Mass. Bay Colony. 1636: Settled Scituate, Plymouth Colony where he engaged in disputes, attempting to secure civil & religious freedoms. 1646, he removed to London. On 10 May 1648, word reached Gov. Winthrop that William Vassall had relocated to Barbados. William Vassal's plantation in St. Michael's Parish, west side of the gulf, on river that runs through Bridgetown. He was appointed Commissioner for the highways in Barbados. In1655, Cromwell's English Fleet arrived determined to conquer the Caribbean. In an effort to secure support for the fleet's mission, William Vassall was appointed Commissioner for Implementation of Navigation Acts, & Commissioner for the Prize Office, by Edward Winslow & other Commissioners accompanying the fleet. William Vassall probably refused to change sides. He died during the period when English Fleet ships were returning to England to report to Cromwell that they had failed to accomplish all their goals.
