- Alvin C. "Al" Hall, 88, of Plaistow, died on Monday, November 23, 2009, at Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, after being stricken at his home.
Born in Huntington, MA, son of the late Howard and Grace (Chilson) Hall, he was raised in Westfield, MA, the youngest of 13 children.
He was a member of the Westfield High School class of 1937 and was first employed at Forster Machine Co. and later Hall Brothers Woodworking Co.
A veteran of WWII, Mr. Hall served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a recipient of the Certificate of Valor in recognition of the 41 combat missions he flew as a pilot of a B-24. Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Hall was employed as a flight instructor for Wiggins Airways.
He began his career with the FAA as an air traffic controller at LaGuardia International Airport in New York City. At the time of his retirement he had served for 20 years as the chief air traffic controller at Albany, NY International Airport.
A resident of Schenectady, NY for 30 years before moving to Plaistow in 1990, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Plaistow.
He was most recently the featured speaker of the Veterans Day ceremonies at Timberlane Regional High School in Plaistow. An accomplished artist in oils and pastels, Mr. Hall also enjoyed golfing.
He was predeceased by his first wife, June (Meachem) Hall, and a son, Wayne Hall, and is survived by his present wife of 19 years, Elinor (Burrill) (Grainger) Hall; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward A. and Jeannie Hall of Gansevoort, NY; a stepdaughter and her husband, Joy (Grainger) and John J. Merrill of Hampton, NH; a stepson and his wife, Rodney and Mary Beth Grainger of Port Charlotte, FL; grandchildren, Julie (Merrill) Fellows and her husband, Doug, Jeffrey B. Merrill and his wife, Kristen, John J. Merrill, Jr. and his wife, Amy, James A. Merrill and his wife, Barbara, Alex Grainger and his wife, April, Matthew Grainger, Adam Grainger, and Brett Grainger; also six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call on November 27, 2009 at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, Plaistow, NH. His funeral will be held on November 28, 2009 at First Baptist Church, Plaistow. Burial will be November 30, 2009 at St. Mary's Cemetery, Westfield, MA.
